Friday, August 23

I am so proud of me! I held my liquor soooo well last night. :)

It was Simon's unofficial goodbye party. We all got together at the old store (which I, by the way, kicked ass at yesterday morning before leaving) and wandered over to Jason's for a barbecue.

I had brought a Mason jar of scotch, because I don't keep it in a bottle that closes tight enough for me to bring it anywhere. I got made fun of a lot.

We started drinking right at five-thirty or six, and by the time the hot dogs and burgers were ready I had quite a buzz going from not having eaten all day. We ate, then smoked some pot, and then sat around while it got dark. We stared into the windows of Jason's apartment building and made fun of the tennants. I drank almost the entire Mason jar.

We went back inside for a moment while Jason showed us his knives (he's kind of a freak - these were show knives, all curvy and ridged and three-dimensional) and let Simon shoot his dart gun. Then we wandered off to a nearby playground and Marcy, Mel and I raced each other to the swing set.

The park was nice, although it was a bit embarrasing to be drinking so obviously in a family place. I kept trying to figure out if Derek and Mel were together. If they're not, then she's obviously got her sights on him, because the number of times I found her in between myself and D are uncountable. Weird.

Then the police came. They kicked us out of the park for being too loud, which we so weren't - everyone was so mellow. What a freaky suburban-type neighbourhood.

Sooooo, we walked back up to our store, or rather to the bar next door to our store, where Derek and Jon got even more baked and I fulfilled my Diet Coke requirements for the day. (I had realized in horror that I hadn't had a Diet Coke all day and needed to remedy the situation FAST.) I had gotten Brian to cover at the old store, and I went in there to see how he was doing. He was freaking out. The store's so dirty! And we left him so much work! All I could say was "Yeah! Isn't it great?" because it is, it just is. Marcy asked me if I wanted to work at her store again. She wanted to know if Jim would let me go. I don't think he'd like that, but we can always try.

So anyway we sat at the bar and tried to convince Simon to stay a bit longer. But he couldn't, so Marcy and I walked him to his house and said our goodbyes. It was so sad! We couldn't stay at the bar afterwards (mostly because when they saw us get up to walk Simon home, they started clearing all our stuff off their table), so six of us (Mel, Marcy, Brad, Jon, Derek and I) took a cab over to Marcy's apartment and hung around some more there. Brad left really early, but the rest of us sat around, ordered pizza, got more baked and watched The Dark Crystal, which Marcy was totally right about. How fucking cool is that movie when you're high.

I took a cab home from Marcy's and watched Friends before I went to bed. It was four-thirty in the morning and I'd gotten up at six-twenty that morning. Mmmm... I have to go to more office parties.

I just got my 3-day novel writing contest survival guide pamphlet.

And I'm scared.

I have stars for eyes and a heart for a mouth.

I went to my favourite folk festival.

It's still my favourite festival.

And Jian got hit in the head with Christine Lavin's baton.

And everyone who's ever seen them loves Fruit, no matter what.

And I got cramps in the arches of my feet from dancing too much.

And I saw a chipmunk from really close up.

And lots of very colourful dragonflies!

And got a crush on a way-too-young bagpipe player.

And Murray McLauchlan made me laugh.

And I saw Melissa and Maria and Lisa and AJ.

And I got a sandal tan.

And I sang in the choir and then quit because there was too much stuff going on.

And I scared EFO and all the people around me by knowing all the words to all their songs.

And I learned how to pronounce Slainte Mhath. ("When I say Slainte you say Mhath! SLAINTE!" "MHATH!" "SLAINTE!" "MHATH!" - oh dood, that looks freaky written down.)

And I saw Bruce Cockburn!

And Jian practically choked when he saw my tattoo. ("OH MY GOD!" is now the theme song to my tattoo.)

And I learned that pianos weigh more than surprises from Les Barker, funnest poet ever.

And like every good Summerfolk chick, I now lust after all the Bills in the Bill Hilly Band. Especially when they start dancing in a synchronized manner.

And I ate white fish on a bun!

And had to have it pointed out to me that the bay has receded what appears to be the length of a football field since I last was there.

And the Michael Kaeshammer Trio + EFO = eclectic perfection.

And now I'm thinking I'm going to hijack Fiona's new Fruit CD and make some mp3s so that some of y'all can get to know them too. And go to the website dammit!
